Screen Time Guidelines for Children

Parents often have questions regarding screen time for their kids, so let's discuss today:

According to the American Academy of Pediatrics:

  • Under 24 months of age: No screen time

  • Ages 2-5: Maximum of 1 hour of supervised screen time

  • Ages 6+: Consistent limits on screen time

What are the consequences of prolonged screen time?

  • Dry eyes due to decreased blink rate

  • Eye strain

  • Headaches

  • Accommodative spasm - this is where the muscles that we use for near work get stressed and begin to spasm, causing blurry vision.

What are some ways to reduce the complications of prolonged screen time?

  • Use the 20-20-20 rule: Every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away, for 20 seconds

  • Remember to blink often

  • Use a physical timer, and turn off the devices when the timer ends
